Wilton is located in Sacramento County, some 20 minutes from the city, and has an area of 25.9 square miles. The area population is 4,788 people, as of 2007. The area is approximately three hours from the northern Redwoods; and three hours from Tahoe.

Local schools in Wilton include C.W. Willard Elementary School, park of the Elk Grove Unified School District. C.W. Dillard is the only Elk Grove school south of the Cosumnes River. The present school was built in 1956 and named for C.W. Dillard who donated the land for the school. Davis school joined with Dillard in 1915, and when the Elk Grove district unified in 1959, the Lee School joined with Dillard. Other school options in Wilton include Small Cloud Christian School and Wilton Christian School.

The Wilton Fire Protection District has a service area of 60 square miles in Sacramento County, California. The department has a total fire-fighting force of 63 members that respond out of three fire stations and one satellite fire station to ensure effective deployment of apparatus and manpower to any type of emergency incident within the district. The Wilton Fire Protection District participates as part of the Sacramento Regional Fire/EMS Communications System.
