If you are looking for the latest hometown news in the neighboring communities of Rio Linda and Elverta, the Rio Java coffee shop is where locals go for a latte and the latest scoop. And while these quaint family-friendly communities are up-to-date on the latest news, the rich history of these towns is evident at every corner.

The areas now known as Rio Linda and Elverta saw the arrival of the first pioneers in the 1850's. In 1908 the town of Elverta was named and the Elverta Post Office was established. Very soon thereafter the founder of Sear's Roebuck, Alvah E. Roebuck of Chicago, purchased a tract of land immediately south of Elverta and called it Rio Linda Colony. The Rio Linda land changed hands several times and eventually was purchased by Sacramento Suburban Fruit Lands Company.

But chickens have a very special place in the history of Rio Linda. When it became evident to the early settlers that the land would not produce fruit as advertised by Sacramento Suburban Fruit Lands Company because a layer of hardpan just below the surface soil prevented adequate drainage, the enterprising Rio Lindans turned to chickens. They didn't need any drainage and very soon there was more than one chicken in every pot in Rio Linda.

The Rio Linda Poultry Producers Association was formed in 1920. The sister communities flourished and grew with deep rural roots and strong family values. Chicken ranching and egg production remained a significant part of the community into the 1960's and early 1970's.

Residents of Rio Linda and Elverta still cherish their rural neighborhood and are reluctant to see it disappear. There is a strong spirit of community and efforts continue to keep it that way.

The Rio Linda and Elverta Recreation and Parks District serve both communities and operate ten park sites scattered throughout the communities. The district also offers many community services and meeting space at the community center in Rio Linda and at the recreated historic Train Depot. In addition the park district offers a host of classes, recreation programs, after school programs, senior nutrition, and athletic programs for children and adults.

Many community groups and organizations are active in Rio Linda and Elverta include: the Rio Linda Elverta Chamber of Commerce, the Rio Linda Elverta Historical Society, the Rio Linda Grange, the Rio Linda Lion's Club, the Moose Lodge, the American Legion, the Masonic Lodge, the RLE Community Watch, the RLE Visions Task Force, the Dry Creek Parkway Advisory Committee and the county appointed Community Planning Council.

The communities have long enjoyed a very strong elementary school district which was recently merged into the new Twin Rivers School District. Both communities offer excellent schools to the area residents.

The Rio Linda and Elverta area is bisected by the Dry Creek Parkway which is a large open space running from the northeast to the southwest between the two communities which feature biking, pedestrian and equestrian trails. Gibson Ranch at the north of the Parkway offers a wonderful ranch experience including horse rentals, farm animals and petting pens.
