Founded in the 19th century, Newcastle became the location of regular freight and passenger trains by the Transcontinental Railroads in1864. Also in the heart of the gold country, Newcastle drew a whirlwind of miners and gold prospectors who soon discovered that the town would be known more for its orchards rather its meager gold mines.
With a variety of smaller annual celebrations, the notable festivity for Newcastle residents is the Mountain Mandarin Festival in nearby Auburn. When fall days in the Placer County foothills are warm and the nights are chilly, mandarin orange growers gather to celebrate the ripening of their harvest at this annual event.
Vendors at the event offer locals and visitors alike a multitude of foods enhanced with mandarin oranges including beverages, salads, pulled pork and BBQ sauce, ice-creams, glazed nuts, chocolate-dipped mandarins, fudge, jams, jellies, olive oils, marinades and syrups.
