With the appearance of a peaceful old mining town, Nevada City has a population of just 2,800, but it wasn't always so peaceful. During the Gold Rush there were 10,000 boisterous souls living in this charming Nevada County town and in the general election of 1856, the 2,082 ballots cast in Nevada City were exceeded in the state only by Sacramento and San Francisco.

The tight-knit community of Nevada City is at once family friendly, rich with culture and proud of its significant history. With an award-winning school system and a crime rate that is less than half the national average, Nevada City remains a sought after place to live. Prospective homebuyers will find Nevada City’s neighborhoods thick with classic Victorians and charming turn of the century bungalows.

In addition to its undeniable homespun charm, Nevada City offers a private off-the-beaten-path location near state highways 49 and 20. Residents not only value this seclusion but also realizing the value of preserving city history for future generations, citizens have been successful in having the entire downtown area registered as a national historic landmark.

This historic district includes 93 buildings in addition to 18 state and local landmarks.
Nevada City was developed along the banks of Deer Creek in 1849 by miners with the onset of the gold rush. The town was first known as Dry Diggins and later civic leaders renamed the town Nevada, the Spanish word for ‘snow-covered’. In 1850 and the next year the newly-incorporated city became the Nevada County seat. The town's name was later changed to Nevada City after its title was borrowed by the state to the east.

Nevada City has had its share famous resident including former U.S. President Herbert Hoover and three former U.S. senators, George Hearst, A. A. Sargent and William Morris Stewart.

In addition to a rich history with notable residents, Nevada City plays host to some of the most spectacular and diverse recreational opportunities in the country. Known for its world-class mountain biking, kayaking and winter sports offerings, visitors from around the globe travel to Nevada and Sierra Counties to participate in their sports of choice at all athletic levels from beginner to professional.
