The neighboring communities of Cameron Park and Shingle Springs are ideal towns if you are looking for a quiet country life with all the luxuries of city living. Historically rich communities, Cameron Park and Shingle Springs were once home to the Niesnan branch of the Maidu Indians. Today Cameron Park is home to 16,114 residents and Shingle Springs, 3,168 residents. The two areas offer a rural atmosphere with the amenities found in cities close at hand. Several shopping centers provide a wide array of goods and services. For additional needs, Sacramento is just 30 miles to the west.
The community that is now Cameron Park was envisioned in the 1950s by a successful auto dealership owner and former championship rodeo rider, Larry Cameron who purchased 5,000 acres of land and envisioned a community in which residents could swim in a lake, play golf, and use a private airport.
Cameron Park is very much a bedroom community, and features many subdivisions of single family ranch-style homes built since the 1970s, as well as newer homes ranging from Tuscan-style villas to quaint bungalows. Cameron Park real estate also includes many horse properties south of Route 50 in the beautiful Cameron Estates, as well as a variety of town homes, condominiums, and new home developments.
Today, Larry Cameron's dream has been realized. Cameron Park reflects a wide scope of interests, with ranch sized properties, medium and high density residential areas, shopping, a championship country club, recreational lake and the Airpark Estates. The Cameron Airpark Estates provides a unique opportunity for pilots to commute from home to destination without ever leaving the plane. Wide streets double as taxiways between homes and the airstrip. Residents can enjoy swimming, picnics, and some of the finest Fourth of July fireworks in El Dorado County at Cameron Park Lake.
Some glimpses of the pre-gold rush past can also be found; grinding rocks and burial mounds of the Niesnan branch of the Maidu Indians are still visible. For another look at past endeavors, some structures of the Skinner Winery from 1865 can be seen at the corner of Green Valley Road and Cameron Park Drive.
In 1867 the once rural neighboring town of Shingle Springs was established with the draw of gold mines and agricultural endeavors. Originally a gold mining settlement, claims soon failed and while the miners moved on cattle ranchers and farmers recognized the value in the lush hills of this El Dorado county community and stayed on. The first post office was established on February 3, 1853, and in 1866 the Sacramento Valley Railroad was extended to Shingle Springs.
These two communities benefit from each other and share a bounty of recreational opportunities which center on the seasonal climate found in the Mother Lode region. A short drive of 70 miles puts residents in the heart of the best winter sports setting found in the United States; Lake Tahoe. The blue water of Lake Tahoe also serves the summer outdoor enthusiast. The American and Consumnes Rivers offer a wonderland of activities year round in addition to the beautiful El Dorado National Forest.
Cameron Park and Shingle Springs also offer award-winning public schools, unique shopping and a variety of quaint restaurants and cafes to suit all tastes.
